Creative of the Week: Orie

IG: @orie.4 @fourplayny

Hello my brothers and sisters! I'm back with another feature Friday to talk about a very close friend of mine. He's a graphic designer, stylist, clothing designer and more. He goes by many names, Orie, O, The Oracle, Ron + more. Without any further ado, please welcome my friend O to the chat!

Interview

Me: "Hey O, so let's get right into it. Can you start off by telling us name, age, where you were born?"

O: "My name's Orie. I'm 25. I'm from Bronx, NY born and raised."

Me: "Okay, okay. So let's get right when into the brand, fourplay. When did you start fourplay and why?"

O: "I started the brand in 2016 during my junior year in college. I started it as a way to get my ideas out as a graphic designer and fan of fashion, but also to be a positive influence/role model for my sister and younger relatives who looked up to me."

Me: "That's a beautiful thing; to wanna be there for family and put on for them. Where does the name fourplay come from?"

O: "Fourplay came about from my love and experience from basketball and my family dynamic/upbringing. The number 4 was my first jersey number in my very first basketball game and I was 4 years old at the time. I grew up in a household of 4 (mom, dad, sister and myself). My grandmother is born on Aug 4th and my other grandmother is July 20th but at 4:44pm. So that’s where the 4 came from. The “play” comes from the idea of continuance and progression. For example, if a story line is going on a narrator would say “as the story progresses” or if you hit play on a remote that means the movie is proceeding, that doesn’t mean there’s an ending. So in all fourplay means “fourward progression, four fun, fourever” which ironically is 444."

Me: "That's a great explanation. I know the audience will love that. And you know people are all about numbers and synchrony so I bet that also plays a part in the brands success. People may feel connected on a spiritual level. Where do you see the fourplay brand going? Any additional product line?"

O: "My goal is for it to fit in that hybrid space of high fashion and street wear where you can’t anticipate what the next thing will be."

Me: "That's definitely a good placement you can say for the brand. So we know you have hoodies, sweats, T's, and more clothing. Why did you decide to drop a fitted line?"

O: "I had the idea about 2 years ago when I made snapbacks that I wish were fitteds, but I didn’t have the design done until before quarantine this year. I started to give it more thought when my bro Delly had an endorsement deal with New Era last fall to do a campaign for the grey bottoms. I was supposed to have the hats out in May but Covid-19 and other factors slowed things down. But here we are now with 4 colors releasing soon. Red, yellow, burgundy, baby blue."

Me: "And they go sooo crazy. (Peep my IG to see the baby blue, it's firee!) What’s your favorite piece you’ve added to your brand? why?"

O: "My favorite pieces thus far is the fitted hat that I designed right before quarantine, which will be releasing soon. wearing it gives me nostalgia of Pharrell + Nigo when they wore their brands head to toe."

Me: "What has been the brand's greatest accomplishment thus far?"

O: "Pushing thru to 4 years has been the greatest accomplishment thus far. Its been an arduous road but its all worth it for sure. Its been fun to see my development as an artist/designer."

Me: "Four years of doing what you love is a beautiful thing. Congrats to you for that accomplishment. So we know all of your successes, but what’s been the hardest part of having a brand?"

O: "I would say the hardest part is coping with how lonely the journey is. But there’s no complaining because this was all my idea from the start and doing what I do makes me happy so I could never stop."

Me: "Love that for you. So onto you and your own look. How would you describe your personal style/aesthetic?"

O: "I would say my style is a blend between classic/vintage looks and futuristic looks. I like a great appreciation for 90's hip hop aesthetics (ex: Nike, Polo Ralph Lauren, Starter, Timberland) and for the brands that are ahead of its time in high fashion (Maison Martin Margiela, Number Nine, Raf Simons Rick Owens, Alyx studios, ACW)."

Me: "Yea I can definitely see that description for you and your look. A mix between the old and new. Classic and new age. So this question I ask all my interviewees to reflect on self and give some self-love. So, what is your favorite feature about yourself and why?"

O: "My favorite feature about myself would happen to be my hands. Without them I wouldn’t be able to create the things I do."

Me: "I love that answer. Very creative! If you could leave the people with any words encouragement, what would it be?"

O: "I would say to find what you love to do and do it. don’t indulge in anything without having a passion for it or purpose behind doing it, because essentially you’ll be wasting your time."

I'm back with another color palette, this one being Pink. Pink is one of my favorite colors so this one HAS to be fye. I hope you guys like ;)

WOMEN'S LOOKS

Look 1

Top: Isa Boulder $280

Skirt: Jacquemus $420

Headwrap: Amazon $7

Purse: Colina Strada $260

Earrings: Monies $160

Shoes: Jacquemus $570

This look is so beautiful; it's like a California sunset palette. The shades of pinks and orange really adds so much depth to this outfit. I really love the color tones here. The Jacquemus loafer is casual yet still adding style to the overall look. This ISA sweater is so fire; the cut off on the hip and angle of how this top falls so pretty. I love the structure and fit on this top. This fit is 10/10, chef's kiss.

Look 2

Top: Louisa Bailou $335

Skirt: Louisa Bailou $250

Shoes: Fendi $730

Earrings: Monies $340

Purse: SHEIN $8

Fit 2 is really for all my bad bitches. The bubblegum pink in the accessories mixed with the miniskirt is a great combination. It's a great mix of cute and sexy, I love that.

Look 3

Top: Isa Boulder $335

Pants: Eckhaus Latta $595

Bag: Club Monaco $48

Shoes: Gucci $850

Look 3 is really different but it's my type of fit. This sweater on sweater combo is perfect. The loafers keeps the look calm but there's so much fun in this look. These Eckhaus knit pants are so playful and fun; they remind me of a ragdoll. This jelly pink bag plus the ISA gloves are the perfect accessories.

Look 4

Shirt: Jacquemus $485

Pants: Serapis $340

Boots: Simon Miller $560

Bag: JW PEI $39

Look 4 is a great mix of color and black. Since the top and pant are so colorful with pattern as well, I kept the shoes and bag simple and black. I also like how the heel is silver which is also included in the pants. It's so hard for to pick a favorite look for this palette; 1-4 are all so unique. Let's get into look 5, though.

Look 5

Dress (used as top) : Isa Boulder $445

Gloves: Isa Boulder $165

Shorts: I'm Sorry by Petra Collins $265

Shoes: Nike $115

So look 4 is obviously a more sporty look compared to 1-4. This look included very soft pinks, with these Petra Collins' shorts. The shorts are actually a set but I like taking pieces from sets and creating entirely different looks, which is what I did here. I felt the fit really didn't need any accessories because of the gloves so I kept it simple. Let me know which looks you guys love most, this one was really hard to choose from for me!!

MEN'S LOOKS

Look 1

Top: Landlord $245

Pants: Junya Watanabe $595

Shoes: Converse $75

Hat: Burberry $250

Cheaper option bucket hatlink:

Look 1 is very classy but also giving very much skateboarder vibes. This pink bucket ties into the Converse sole and keeps the pink palette all connected.

Look 2

Top: Comme des Garcons Homme $855

Pants: Random Identities $235

Shoes: Maison Margiela $665

Beanie: Acne Studios $200

This Comme sweater is to die for!!! I can see this as unisex, and used for a lot of different looks. It can be paired with a pair of shorts and sneakers, dress pants and loafers, or even denim overalls.

Look 3

Top: Doublet $1090

Pants: Random Identities $235

Durag: Phlemuns $50

Shoes: Jordan Pony hair 4's (available for resell on sites like Stock X $200-$400)

This fit is super cozy yet serving you a look. It's giving effortless but still letting people know, yes I have a sense of style but I'm not over-the-top with it. It's the durag with this for me. I like to envision these fits on; just imagine seeing your man walking towards you in this?!

Look 4

Top: Noon Goons $60

Pants: Feng Chen Wang $470

Bucket Hat: Y3 $90

Shoes: 11 by Boris Bidjan Saberi $500

This fit is giving me Bushwick. I usually wouldn't mix red and pink but this fit meshed very nicely together. The prominent colors being pink, red and black makes the look very playful yet still fashion forward.

Look 5

Top: We11done $685

Pants: Jacquemus $480

Shoes: Jacquemus $500

Fit 5 is giving fall weather, chest out, little bit of skin out. You can also add a chain to accessorize, or even a neutral toned bucket hat.

I really had a lot of fun with this fit so it's hard to choose a favorite men and women's fit! I can't chose from the women's but for men's I'd go with look 3! Let me know what you guys think.

Creative of the Week: Tokyo Corleone

IG: @tokyocorleone

Hey guys, I'm back with Feature Friday (skipped out last Friday) and I'm here to discuss a very talented friend of mine. This gal has dipped into many fields in the creative industry such as photography, styling, image consulting and more. I truly value this girl and am super happy to have met her. I want to introduce you all to my dear friend Tokyo!

Interview

Me: "Hi babe! Please tell us your name, age, ethnicity, where you were born, where you live."

Tok: "I go by Tokyo Corleone, I'm 23 (24 today so wish me a happy birthday mfs). Ethnicity: that nigga, I'm from South side Jamaica Queens, currently living here."

Me: "Happy birthday my love. It's Libra season!! You know I got a love/hate relationship with yall. But anyways! Let's get into the fun stuff. So Tok, as a creative (being a stylist, consultant, creative direction and photographer) what is your favorite outlet?"

Tok: "Honestly creative directing because it involves all of it. I get to decide how I want things to look, where I want it to take place, how I want the models to express themselves during the process of shooting. I prefer to be called an artist rather than a creative. I feel people confuse the two. Artist provoke emotion and innovation; creatives is more of an on the spot thing, not really conveying emotion but creating whats happening now, rather than what you feel (its a popularity contest)."

Me: "What are some of your favorite brands / designers?"

Tok: Let's start from Avant Garde. I categorize my faves by who they cater to. Vivienne Westwood, Rei Kawakubo, Junya Wutanabe, Jun Takahashi, Maison Margiela, Rick Owens,  Issey Miyake, Raf Simons. If we're getting into Black designers: Kerby Jean Raymond (Pyer Moss), Pharell , Jerry Lorenzo, Mowalola, Shayne Oliver, Samuel Ross. They all stand for something and in a way broke a barrier in fashion. They changed style, whether it be distressing, cutting and sewing... they speak to a specific social class: grungy, underdog, the most misunderstood."

Me: " I definitely can see why these are some of your faves. You embody these designers through your everyday looks and persona. How would you describe your own style & aesthetic?"

Tok: "I'd say anti fashion. I like to take trends that I do like & do shit with it that people may not like. I'm more on the anti fashion side of things."

Me: "That totally makes sense for you. You really do inspire me to stay in my creative lane through your style and knowledge in fashion. You're the first person I call to confirm a big purchase or when I'm unsure; you truly are an icon in the making. So Tok, as a creative who is passionate about clothing and what you wear, what is your favorite part about self expression through clothing?"

Tok: "Being able to make one of one looks, expressing how I feel that day about what's going in the world. Right now I'm wearing a hoodie by 424; the american flag is incorporated with a chapel in Detroit that was destroyed and has yet to be rebuilt. There's always a message behind my outfits. Even my jeans are reconstructed to represent the destruction in america."

Me: "See, that's so unique yet informative. Not many people, including myself would know that. I love how your outfits can express a story. That's beautiful. So my next question, what does style mean to you?"

Tok: "Freedom, there's no rules to styles, its whatever the fuck you want it to be, nobody can tell you what to do with this fashion shit. Fashion is a fad within itself that steals from people with actual style."

Me: "Why did you get into photography? What are some of your favorite things you captured on camera?"

Tok: "One of the reasons is because of my uncle, he started to do it after he retired from the MTA. Another reason is because I love capturing memories. I didn't do it for fashion at first bit then I realized I can incorporate the natural movements of models and use those moments as well. The following 3 pictures are my favorites because I like vintage grainy, editorial style portraits. These were some of the few that have always stood out to me. This is work I always go back to for motivation as well as inspiration."

Me: "Do you plan on making a career out of photography or is it just a favorable hobby?"

Tok: "I plan on making a career on everything i fucking do. i wasn't born these natural born gifts for a reason, i had to get it on my own & ima do what I can do with it. That's what I'm on this earth to do."

Me: So this question I ask all my interviewees... what is your favorite feature about yourself? Why?"

Tok: "My eyebrows! they really shape my face, I look like a completely diff person if I get them done or if I don't. And girls love em so why the fuck not, I love em too!"

Me: Yes it's the eyebrows for me too. They deff add dimension to your face!! So lastly, my Toki, if you can leave the people with any words of encouragement, what would it be?"

Tok: "Fuck what everybody doing on Instagram, respectfully. that shit is just IG. Don't get discouraged because you feel like your Instagram isn't poppin' & you feel like you have to conform to style you see that doesn't fit how you feel. Dress how you feel, do what you feel. Just be human and live life."

*end of interview*

Well guys, I hope you all learned a lil' something from my friend Tok. She is truly a fashion inspiration to me. I go to her for advice or just to share my excitement with an outfit concept I create. She is going to achieve so many great things in every field she goes down. Go and wish her a happy birthday today as well!! I'll talk to you guys soon, <3
