Featuring Artist: Mushu

Hey guys, I'm super super superrrr excited to be writing this today. I got one of my favorite artists to be on my blog and it means a whole lot to me! What other time to feature his work than Scorpio season, (he's a Scorpio if that wasn't obvious) and during Halloweekend?! We love divine timing!!

I discovered Mushu through Twitter where he posts most of his work; I instantly fell in love and started following him right away. For the interview I told him I'd feature about 5-7 of my favorite pieces of art but there's honestly too many I love to chose from.. so there's more like 20 included (lol). It's an honor being able to speak with someone whose art literally speaks to you on an emotional level. With that being said, let's get into this interview!!

Interview

So for starters, what's your name & where were you born?

Mushu: Maxwell Xavier Wirta, born in NC.

How did you get into making the artwork you do? When did you start?

Mushu: I got into art work through going through my moms sketch books for fashion school, I started creating really young. First time I really remember asking for a sketch book was 3rd grade.

A lot of people, including myself, feel very connected to your artwork. It seems to come from a place of hopeless love or romance, with a dark sided twist. How would you describe your work?

Mushu: I don’t like to describe my work because some of the pieces that people perceive as dark are actually not that to me when I make them. I create the characters you see free of name free of gender free of class so that anyone can look at it and relate to it whether they see themselves in it or something else. For the sake of this being my 2nd ever interview I’ll give a little insight though. Demons were once angels. But is what I’m drawing even demons. Angels can’t be related to because they’re too perfect and have unwavering blind faith and do what is told. So what do people as humans relate to the most.

That's an interesting concept, differentiating between angels and demons. Now that I think about it as humans, which side do we resonate with more...

Where do you get inspiration from?

Mushu: I get my inspiration from my day today mainly from people and music. Lessons taught in anime and games, from my thoughts when I’m inside my own head. Fun fact I never know what I’m drawing I just start drawing, I find a song I resonate to and just create.

You’ve had a lot of traction within these past few months from Twitter, which is how I discovered you. How does it feel to be receiving so much love from fans right now?

Mushu: The influx of support and love lately is amazing because my goal as a artist is being unfolded in front of me. My goal as an artist is to make you feel as if you have a friend in me. That when you look at my art me and you the reader of this are now having a conversation. I’m venting to you, updating you on my life and letting you know what’s going on. With that, that means anyone that sees my work and supports my work all have one mutual friend me. That means that you’re not alone. My goal with my work is to make you feel not alone and to help you express yourself however you interpret my work there’s no wrong answer which is why I don’t give my own.

I definitely feel deeply connected to your work and feel it's helped me express my own feelings through pictures rather than words. I've definitely sent your pictures to people when I wasn't sure how to actually type out my own words and emotions. I love that that's one of your goals with your artwork. What are some of your favorite pieces you’ve created so far and why?

Mushu: My favorite pieces are the ones I haven’t posted the ones I create with my hands while painting. They much more raw it’s chaotic.

What has been the best part of your creative journey so far? The hardest part?

Mushu: The best part is the people and I could right a whole essay on that in itself so I won’t get to far into it but the answer is the people. I don’t think I have a answer for what’s the worst part. I believe everything happens that’s supposed to happen so I have gratitude for everything good and bad in my life I’m grateful for it all.

Where do you want to take “controlled chaos” in the next few years? Any new art ventures ?

Mushu: Cntrlledchaos will not be forever in the next few years I’ll lay it to rest. Cntrlledchaos is the process of what I’m going through right now and what every upcoming artist goes through. That’s all I’m going to say on that cause like I stated earlier I don’t like explaining the meaning to what I do that’s for you to interpret yourself.

What is your favorite quality/characteristic about yourself?

Mushu: I honestly hate speaking up on myself but I would say recently I can put myself in someone else’s shoes very well.

If you could leave the readers with any words of advice, what would it be?

Mushu: Don’t think too hard thinking hard is the downfall of a lot of people even myself. Live in the moment don’t live in the past/ in future. Follow your heart not your brain. Belief has to start with you.
